Integrative Psychiatry

A good psychiatrist does more than dispense a pill…

If you experience difficulties with sleep, mood, impulsivity, anxiety, irritability, or inattention, a comprehensive integrative psychiatric evaluation may be a wise step.  Our appoach is grounded in an open-minded, patient-centered, holistic approach that considers the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and environment.

Our integrative psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner will help you decide when and whether a medication or nutritional/herbal supplement may be useful, provide talk and mindfulness-based psychotherapies, or recommend other evidence-based treatment modalities. We will spend time getting to know you and learning about your life circumstances and treatment goals. If we are not working with you in therapy ourselves, we will collaborate with your outside therapist and other providers.

Sometimes therapy is not enough...

Psychiatrists are physicians, whose medical training can be especially important as psychological symptoms may have nutritional, infectious, autoimmune, endocrinologic, or metabolic components or root causes.  For instance, sleep apnea, HIV, syphilis, Lyme’s, hypothyroidism, vitamin deficiencies, Alzheimer’s and other dementias often have psychiatric manifestations.

An astute psychiatrist keeps an eye out for medical illnesses masquerading as psychiatric symptoms, and vice-versa.  In addition to prescribing medications, both psychiatrists and mental health nurse practitioners may order laboratory, radiological, or other diagnostic testing when necessary.  We collaborate with medical specialists, acupuncturists, naturopaths and therapists to provide comprehensive care for mind and body.
